FOX RIDGE Fires Up for 2006

(ARCADIA, Wisconsin) – With the west central Wisconsin country side laid out before them this Friday night, the people will sit back, relax and enjoy the sites and sounds which surround them.

Is it the rolling bluff lands that they’ll be viewing? Is it the natural beauty of the wetlands along the Trempealeau river that will catch their eyes?

Will it be the spectacular site lines to the early spring sun setting behind the ridge tops as the sky over head opens up to display her jewel be speckled view of the starry universe above that will catch their breath with shear delight? Or, perhaps the sounds of nature will waft up and out of the valley below, riding a gentle breeze to reach the top of the ridge where they’re sitting, to tickle their ears?

While these experiences, and more, will surely be available, it’ll be a completely different form of ‘wild life’ on display this Friday night for those gathered on the north side of Arcadia, WI.

This Friday marks the 2006 season opener at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY!

The talk and excitement has been building at a non-stop pace this past week as competitors and fans alike look forward to the chance of returning to one of the premier dirt-track facilities in the upper mid-west for a night of thunderous racing action!

The fans who make the trek to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY will surely not be disappointed; their initial options will be to either visit the state of the art indoor restaurant-grade concession area, or venture straight out onto the spacious cement grandstands to grab their preferred seating location.

Or, perhaps they’ll decide to make it a special evening by spending the night enjoying the action from one of the many decks of the second-floor V.I.P. area!

Once they’re settled in, the choices and options open further still. Which super star driver will they be rooting for in the six different divisions that will be attacking the lightning fast big 3/8-mile on this particular evening?

The options are almost limitless for the race fan as their excitement will be brought to a crescendo by WISSOTA Late Models – that’s right, the ultra-sophisticated WISSOTA Late Models are back at FOX RIDGE again for the ’06 season – USRA Modifieds, WISSOTA Super Stocks, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, WISSOTA Street Stocks (all five of which are officially sanctioned), or the mighty little crowd pleasing 4-Cylinder Hornets.

Will it be former WISSOTA LATE MODEL National Champion Pat Doar (who’s expressed interest in visiting for the season opener) for whom they cheer? Or will they be rooting for former track champion Steve Isenberg, second generation driver Tim Isenberg or local Late Model ace Lance Mathees?

Will Defending Track Champion Danny Hanson hear their cheers in the WISSOTA Street Stock Division, or another ‘hot shoe’ such as Michael Conrad?

The bottom line, however, is that the fans will have the opportunity to see the best of the best, in both competition and facility, this Friday night.

“We know that the drivers and the fans have a lot of choices for their entertainment,” commented track owners Dave and Judy Hesch, “so we’re trying to provide all of them with the best we can offer for their alternative options – whether it’s our concession and eating area, our clean facilities, our track surface, or our free admission for the kids; We’re really trying to provide a family-friendly environment for our customers to choose as an entertainment option on Friday nights throughout the summer!”

As a matter of fact, some may not even wait until Friday night – a special ‘Test and Tune’ session is being held (weather permitting) Thursday evening (April 20th) from 6 to 9 pm. This event gives drivers an opportunity to get a feel for the track, ‘dial in’ their car’s setups and generally prepare for Friday night’s season opener. Race fans and even casual observers are welcome to attend – while the complete concession area may not be open for the ‘Test and Tune’ session, there’s no admission fee on Thursday night.

Friday night’s on-track action gets underway with hot laps at 7 pm and the green flag for the opening race of the season flying at 7:30! Adult admission is just $10 with all children 12 years of age and under admitted absolutely free!!

So, pack the entire family into the family auto, and head on over to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY to see the Stars of Dirt-Track racing on one of the fastest and most fan-friendly speedways in the upper Midwest!

On Wednesday July 26th, the “Tri Star Engine Supply WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series” will make a $2000 to win visit to ‘THE BIG 3/8-MILE’ in Arcadia, WI!

The “Tri Star Engine Supply WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series” is a WISSOTA Sanctioned Late Model Touring series which visits WISSOTA Dirt Tracks throughout the upper mid-west with mid-week special events, providing racing fans with some of the best dirt-track Late Model racing in the region.

“We have 15 shows booked for this season” stated Series Co-Director Craig Sullivan, “With Fox Ridge being the 10th show on the tour and 2/3rds of the way through the series, the drivers will surely be battling hard for the Tri Star Engine Supply WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series Championship.”

“I think our track is an excellent venue for all types of dirt-track racing,” offered Dave Hesch, “but it’s no secret that to really experience the speed and potential that this speedway offers, fans simply need to see a great Late Model event here – and the TRI-STAR CHALLENGE SERIES visit to THE RIDGE will be an excellent opportunity for fans to see some of the best Late Model touring drivers competing on this track!”

Defending “Tri Star Engine Supply WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series” champion Pat Doar will be on hand for the event along with 2005 WISSOTA Late Model National Champion John Kaanta. Mix in the rest of the high-profile competitors from the Challenge Series, and fans will be witness to some of the best on-track action from some of the best Late Model drivers that the area has to offer!

The addition of the July 26th “Tri Star Engine Supply WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series” event - with an event purse of over $11,000, and a Series point fund of $24,000 – to the current 2006 FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY schedule adds yet another high-profile event for fans to enjoy at one of the premier dirt-track facilities in all of the Upper Mid-West.

The “Tri Star Engine Supply WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series” event joins an already jam-packed schedule for the 2006 season at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY, including three $2000-to-win USMTS Modified touring series events (6/9, 7/14 & 8/18), a $5000-to-win WDRL Late Model Special (8/9), the fan-favorite “NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION” (7/29) and the regular season-ending “THUNDER AT THE RIDGE” two-day event.

‘WDRL’ COMES TO FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY

(Gilman City, MO & ARCADIA, Wisconsin) – FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY owners Dave Hesch and Jeff Reglin along with Jim Wilson are pleased to announce that the WORLD Dirt Racing League PolyDome Late Model Series will be making a return trip to the area!

According to Jim Wilson, founder and President of the Gilman City, Missouri-based series, WDRL drivers will compete at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY in Arcadia, Wisconsin on Wednesday, August 9. Chris Stepan, owner of FYE Motorsports, will promote the event.

This race date is“(a) tremendous addition to an already strong 2006 schedule,” noted Wilson.

“With the dirt work being done at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY this spring, our race there in August should be absolutely fantastic.” He added

The August 9 event at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY fills in the vacant date in the traditional early August WDRL Northern Swing. This year’s swing opens on Monday, August 7 at Superior Speedway, before moving to Viking Speedway in Alexandria, Minnesota on Tuesday, August 8. Following the August 9 stop in Arcadia, the four-night swing concludes with the annual Pretzel City Showdown at Freeport Raceway Park in Freeport, Illinois.

Series drivers last appeared at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY on June 4, 2004, with Brady Smith picking up the 50-lap victory.

This addition to the schedule gives the popular fifth-year series 29 race dates on the 2006 docket. Of those 29 events, ten will be contested in Iowa, six will be held in both Nebraska and Wisconsin, with three being held in Illinois, and two each in Minnesota and Kansas.

WISSOTA LATE MODELS RETURN TO FOX RIDGE

By Dan Bailey for FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (ARCADIA, Wisconsin) – FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY owners Dave Hesch and Jeff Reglin are pleased to announce that the Speedway applied for, and was granted, Late Model sanctioning for the 2006 season from the WISSOTA Sanctioning Body. This means that racing fans and competitors alike will once again be able to revel at the thunder of Late Model action on a regular basis at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY throughout 2006!

“We are extremely excited about bringing the Late Models back to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY for the 2006 season,” said Hesch, a former winning Late Model driver himself, “It is our plan to present some of the best racing action in the area to our loyal racing fans; and with the addition of the Late Models to our existing divisions, we feel that racing fans of all sorts will be able to enjoy an excellent season of on-track action!”

Numerous Late Model drivers, car owners and fans had approached Hesch during the ’04 and ’05 seasons enthusiastically voicing their desires to once again see the track host late model races on a weekly basis. After a successful showing of the division at the “THUNDER AT THE RIDGE” special event in October of ’05, Hesch decided that the timing and climate were perfect for a return to FOX RIDGE of the Premier Dirt-Track Motorsports division in all of America!

With the official sanctioning agreement, FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY has agreed to schedule at least 12 events, which is the minimum amount of races to allow the Late Model drivers to run for WISSOTA track point fund money, for the 2006 season. If 2006 proves to be a success for the class, a full schedule will be offered in 2007.

The nights that the Late Models will not be scheduled to run at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY during the 2006 season will be so as to not conflict with other tracks which have special events on Friday nights thus allowing the Late Model drivers to compete at those events with out losing track points at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY.

The tentative 2006 schedule for FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (available at the OFFICIAL FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY web site – www.foxridgespeedway.com) consists of planned on-track excitement from: WISSOTA Late Models, USRA Modifieds, USMTS Modifieds, WISSOTA Super Stocks, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, WISSOTA Street Stocks, & 4-Cylinder Hornets.

The scheduled 2006 purse for the Late Model class at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY will be consistent with other tracks in the area.

“This Division has continually helped us top our program with an excellent and exciting show for the past two years.” Said Hesch during a recent press gathering, “For 2006 the combination of USRA Modifieds returning for another year along with other exciting announcements we will be making over the next few days, we feel that we will be able to present the racing fans with one of the best nights of fun and on-track excitement to be found in the area.”

The relationship between USRA and FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY has been a successful addition to the Speedways existing commitment to the WISSOTA Promoters Association. Over the past two years, the combination has provided racers and fans alike with some of most exciting and exhilarating racing action in the area.

New this year is the National points fund established by USRA to be paid over and above the weekly track point fund. USRA Modified drivers at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY will be competing for the following Track Point Fund:

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY TO RECONSTRUCT RACING FACILITY

By Dan Bailey for FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (ARCADIA, Wisconsin) – FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY owners Dave Hesch and Jeff Reglin have announced that starting as soon as the frost is out of the ground they will begin an extensive project to re-design and improve the racing surface at the speedway. Comments from drivers in all classes have made the management consider the reconstruction and design changes. “Our plan,” said Hesch, “is to make the necessary alterations so that fans and racers at this track can experience some of the best and most competitive multi-grooved racing in the upper mid-west.”

In order to bring this plan to fruition, FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY has enlisted the assistance of Les Duellman to help create the re-design plan. As a graduate of the prestigious Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Duellman plans to put his Mechanical Engineering Degree, not to mention years of successful racing experience, to work; “What I am doing is taking an engineering approach to designing the banking of a race track,” explained Duellman, “No body enjoys watching racing on a single groove race track; so, using an engineering program I’ve developed, we will create a variably banked corner design which will produce an equally competitive multi-grooved racing surface for all drivers.”

In layman’s terms, a variably banked corner (often compared to the inside of a soup bowl) produces a flatter bottom groove with progressively increasing degrees of banking as one chooses a lane further towards the outside of the racing surface. This allows multiple strategies for drivers: slower, yet quicker, inside grooves or faster, yet longer, outside grooves. “In my planning,” continued Duellman, “I would like to see three distinct grooves all producing equal lap times. It can be done.”

After the redesign is complete, a different type of clay will be put in place as a new racing surface and a new, more fan-friendly, winner’s circle will be designed to bring feature winners closer to the grandstands for a more personal victory celebration!

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY Prepares for FIFTH ANNUAL ‘THUNDER At The RIDGE’

ARCADIA, WI – October, 2005 – Friday and Saturday, October 14th and 15th, the West-Central Wisconsin Countryside will once again come to life with the roar of racing engines and the enthusiastic cheers of racing fans as the final event of the 2005 racing season gets underway at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY.

After taking the month of September off for some well needed rest and recuperation, Arcadia race track owners Dave and Judy Hesch will once again open the gates to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY for the fifth annual running of the ‘THUNDER At The RIDGE’ presented by the ASHLEY FURNITURE HOME STORE.

The two-day special event will please racers and race fans alike with seven separate divisions attacking ‘THE BIG 3/8-MILE’ in hopes of picking up the winner’s share of the generous purse.

Fans will once again be treated to WISSOTA Late Model action at THE RIDGE as the teams and drivers of these super-fast ground-pounders hit the high banks to see who has the power, setup and nerve to attack the track in hopes of collecting the $3000 winner’s paycheck!

The WISSOTA “A” Modifieds as well as the USRA “A” Modified divisions (with several USMTS Modified drivers already stating their interest in attending) will each hit the track looking towards a $1500 paycheck for a feature win!

WISSOTA Super Stock drivers will be competing for a cool $1000 to win payout with the WISSOTA Street Stocks and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds racing towards a $500 to win feature.

And, of course, the crowd pleasing FOX RIDGE 4-Cylinder Hornets will be on hand for their wide-open assault of ‘THE BIG 3/8-MILE’ – racing each other for a $300 pay-day for the feature win.

The Friday Schedule has Grandstands opening at 5 pm with Hot laps scheduled for 6 and the racing action getting underway at 7:00. Following Friday night’s action “Neon Fever” will entertain the crowd with music and fun into the later hours; Fans are invited to dance to the music and ‘mingle’ with their fellow fans and favorite drivers!

Saturday kicks off with a “Speedway Breakfast” open to the public from 9:30 am till Noon in the HEATED concession building. Just $5.50 will open the “Chef’s Menu” with pancakes, scrambled eggs, pork sausage, beverage – with Myers Bakery Sweet Rolls also available.

The speedway grounds will get back to racing action Saturday with the Pit area opening around 3 PM followed by the Grandstands opening at 4:30 – hot laps get underway at 5:30 with the second night of racing action taking the green flag at 6:30!

2005 TRACK CHAMPIONS NAMED AT FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY

(ARCADIA, Wisconsin) -- An interesting dichotomy is laid out for all to see with the naming of the 2005 Track Champions at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY.

On one side of the scale we have a driver with more than a handful of championships highlighting a multi-decade career while on the other side of the scale we have a handful of first-time champions reveling in their title.

It’s true that Mother Nature played a decidedly crucial role in bringing to a close sever extremely close points battles this year. With heavy rains forcing the cancellation of the final two nights of regular-season action at ‘THE BIG 3/8-MILE’, points battles which were sure to erupt into full fledge warfare were simply locked in as they had stood following the August 12th race night results.

But, even with the forced cancellation of the final two nights, drivers and fans alike were treated to some wonderful battles leading up to what has now become the final track standings for 2005.

And with the finalization of the standings – we see the dichotomy mentioned earlier.

Karl Fenske has a name and a history in the sport that is well known throughout the upper Midwest. A driver who has visited Victory Lane in a nearly uncountable number of dirt tracks around the upper Midwest made enough visits to FOX RIDGE’s Victory Lane in 2005 to offset the other nights of bad luck and hold off the determined challenges of local driver John Doelle to pick up his third straight FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY USRA Modified Division Track Championship.

“I saw it in some of the articles this year”, commented the Winona driver with his characteristic laugh – as he referred to his up and down season, “ ‘It’s either feast or famine for Fenske’, but on those nights when we didn’t have problems we were either winning or finishing near the front.”

Despite several feature D.N.F.’s (Did Not Finish) early in the season, Fenske put together seven Feature wins with nine top-5 and 12 top-10 feature finishes. And the point battle was still close.

“We didn’t even start thinking ‘Championship’ until Brad Waits (point leader at the time) missed a week,” explained Fenske, “And then it was Doelle and me – and it got awfully close there for a while!”

And now, with three-in-a-row in his pocket, Fenske is starting to talk like no race fan ever expected, “I’m not saying that I won’t ever drive again,” he stated when asked about ‘next year’, “But, you probably won’t see any more ‘Championship Runs’ from the Fenske camp!”

Fenske said that his entire racing set up is for sale, “I’ve got everything for sale. If it doesn’t sell, maybe I’ll polish up the #99 and just kind of pick and choose a couple races here or there when I get the urge.” But it sure appears that this may have been Fenske’s final full-season hurrah!

FIRST TIME CHAMPIONS

While Fenske basked in the glow of his ‘Three-peat’ – the other four Divisions at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY crowned first-time champions.

20 year-old college student Ryan Olson had a ‘break-out’ year in only his second full-time season behind the wheel. Three WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature wins, coupled with an incredibly consistent 12 top-5 and 15 top-10 finishes in 17 starts was the key to wrapping up the Division Title.

After a year that saw the horrific crash and injury to Lonnie Earney – the odds on sentimental favorite has to be Dennis Earney. This veteran put together a dominating mid-season run collecting a total of six WISSOTA Super Stock feature wins while ringing up 10 top-5 and 12 top-10 feature finishes.

Two straight D.N.F.’s on what turned out to be the final two nights of the season sure tightened up the point battles in this division – but Earney held on to the point lead and collected the Super Stock Championship.

Danny Hanson’s 2005 will probably always be remembered as a story-book dominant run. Six WISSOTA Street Stock feature wins with 13 top-5 and 15 top-10 finishes in 17 starts built up a solid point lead in the standings, which was never truly challenged as the on-track action graduated into the second half of the season.

And with a total of 81 cars collecting points throughout the 2005 season in the 4-Cylinder HORNETS division – Wisconsin driver Mark Bornitz has plenty to be proud of. In 17 feature starts, Bornitz’s impressive consistency brought fourth 16 top-10 and 15 top-5 finishes with three of those finishes ending in Victory Lane!

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY owners Dave and Judy Hesch, while disappointed with the regular season ending under the raining conditions, were none the less excited for the five Champions and the regular competitors as well. “We are extremely sorry that the season had to end with 2 rainouts!”, offered Dave, “It would have been a great night with the point battles so close in all of the classes - we were really looking forward to it!”

“Congratulations to our Track Champions, Karl, Dennis, Danny, Ryan & Mark and all of the 2005 drivers.” Added Judy, “We hope to see all of these drivers, and many more, along with our many faithful race fans at the ‘Thunder at the Ridge’ in October!”

FOX RIDGE racing action takes a rest through the month of September before resuming in full force with the two-day “THUNDER AT THE RIDGE” scheduled for Friday October 7th and Saturday October 8th. Spectators can also enjoy a unique night of fun on Saturday September 17th when FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY hosts the “HARVEST HAVOC – Night of Destruction”. A Combine Demolition derby will highlight this evening of ‘full-moon fever’ along with “TUFF-TRUCKS” competition, a ‘Burn Out’ contest, and ‘Spectator Races’!

MOTHER NATURE RUINS FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY FINAL REGULAR SEASON EVENT

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (ARCADIA, WI) – Heavy rains all day Friday, August 26th, throughout the Upper Midwest left the ground saturated – forcing the cancellation of the regular season finale at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY Friday night August 26th.

Speedway owners Dave and Judy Hesch tried in vain to reschedule another night of racing so that tight point battles could be decided on the track, but established sanctioning body rules disallowed the possibility.

The final track points of the season have been finalized in all five divisions based upon existing standings.

Focus is now trained on the “Harvest Havoc – Night of Destruction” scheduled for Saturday September 17th and the “FIFTH ANNUAL THUNDER AT THE RIDGE” scheduled for Friday October 7th and Saturday October 8th!

FOX RIDGE REGULAR SEASON ENDS TONIGHT!

Well, Mother Nature sure threw a huge ‘Monkey Wrench’ into the season ending points battles, at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY, which were ready to be played out across the final two Friday evenings of August.

Many drivers were ‘banking’, if you’ll pardon the pun, on two additional nights of points-paying racing on the high-banks of ‘THE BIG 3/8-MILE’ to help them either sew up an open battle for position, in the season ending point standings; or to close in upon a fellow competitor in hopes of improving their spot in those same point standings.

But, with the ground-saturating rain throughout the area last Thursday August 18th, which forced the cancellation of racing action Friday the 19th at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY, all of the drivers have, instead, been forced into a single-night battle – a battle which will rage on with much intensification, I’m sure, tonight!

Where as, previously, drivers in both of the aforementioned point scenarios had two weeks worth of points towards which they would look forward, now it’s all been compressed into one single night’s worth of frantic efforts to gather as many points as humanly possible.

That extra night of racing – and those extra points which would have come with it – has simply evaporated into nothingness, and just like T.V. Chef Emeril Lagasse likes to say, “with evaporation comes concentration.” All of these racers efforts will be concentrated on one evening’s worth of on-track action.

Ironically enough, Chef Emeril also likes to say “BAM!” a lot on his T.V. show as well. And quite frankly, I think that’s a fitting coincidence for what race fans might experience if they venture on over to the dirt track in Arcadia tonight.

One would not at all be out of line to expect the regular racer’s doctrine of racing with plenty of ‘give and take’ to be summarily left at home tonight as their haulers hit the road and head out for the final night of regular season action.

In last week’s column, we took a close look at the incredibly tight battle atop the WISSOTA Super Stock Division’s point standings. While just this single night of racing will most assuredly be enough to settle the points battle amongst the top three, it probably impacts the hopes of Jon Duffy the most.

While technically still not mathematically eliminated from a Points Championship, it would definitely take a minor miracle and perhaps an alignment of all possible influencing celestial bodies to usurp any of the top-three positions from Dennis Earney, Troy Langowski or Rodney Dregney – themselves separated by only 7 points. For those top three drivers however, it’s most definitely a ‘make or break’ evening!

USRA Modified driver John Doelle finds himself in much the same position as Jon Duffy. While technically not eliminated from the points championship, Doelle will need all the luck available from any superstition upon which he basis his hopes. In addition, problems for current point leader Karl Fenske wouldn’t hurt Doelle’s hopes. Now, with that said, Fenske has endured a season of ‘feast or famine’ magnitude this year; while the past month has been pretty consistently positive for his red and white #99 – if the famine side of his season were to reappear right now, who knows how the point battle might shape up?

Jeff Brauer and Ryan Olson have a nice points battle going atop the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Division standings, but despite some engine troubles at other tracks, young Olson has been spot-on consistent at FOX RIDGE – consistently finishing up front. Brauer too will need any and all luck to align itself on his side if he’s to take home a championship.

Crowd favorite Danny Hanson appears ready to inherit the title of FOX RIDGE WISSOTA Street Stock Track Champion – a title which to this date has only been held by one other racer. With Travis Krause’s move to the Midwest Modified Division, his four year reign as track champion is over – Hanson will make an excellent champion to represent the track!

And let’s not forget the 4-Cylinder Hornets, in just his second full year of driving duties, Mark Bornitz is ready to collect a track championship.

Of course, tonight is also ‘SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP’ night at FOX RIDGE; feature winners will be crowned ‘Season Champions’ while the points battles are played out to crown ‘Track Point Champions’.

All of this action taking place within the festivities of “FAMILY NIGHT at THE RIDGE” presented by Gold’N Plump.

Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and the first green flag waiving at 7:30! Don’t miss the regular season ending action before we prepare for the “HARVEST HAVOC Night of Destruction” on Saturday September 17th and then the “FIFTH ANNUAL THUNDER AT THE RIDGE” scheduled for October 7th and 8th!

Heavy rains all day Thursday, August 18th, through West Central Wisconsin left the ground saturated – forcing the cancellation of racing at Fox Ridge Speedway Friday night August 19th.

Racing will resume next Friday evening, August 26th with the ”Season Championships – Track Point Champions and Family Fun Night” presented by Gold’N Plump.

In addition to all of the family friendly events scheduled (Kids Rides around the track, A Sand Pile with hidden money, children’s hand-outs at the gate, and other family friendly prizes during intermission) the “Season Champions” will be crowned in all five divisions – additionally, the final track points of the season will be awarded in all five divisions to finalize the tight point battles and crown all five “Point Champions”.

Heading into next weeks season finale, the tightest points battle is in the WISSOTA Super Stock Division where the top four competitors are separated by just 20 points – the top three by only seven!

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A COUPLE OF WEEKS MAKESPoints Battles fueled by good and bad results

(ARCADIA, Wisconsin) - - “Dennis is one of those great competitors,” Commented WISSOTA Super Stock Driver Troy Langowski when asked during a radio interview several weeks ago about point leader Dennis Earney, “It’s guys like him who are fun to race with and against. And, while I’d never wish bad luck upon him, that’s exactly what it’s going to take for any of us to catch him at the top of the point standings.”

That was two weeks and two nights of racing ago.

Earney, with six Super Stock feature wins at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY this season, was sitting atop the point standings with a 25 point advantage over Langowski in second. “It’s not an insurmountable about of points with a month of racing to go,” Langowski had reflected, “But he’s been so consistent, and consistently finishing strong – any of us behind him will need help if we’re going to battle him for the championship.”

That very night, August 5th, Earney suffered a D.N.F. (Did Not Finish) in the evening’s feature event; the last place finisher of those racers who’d started the race! After the evening’s poor finish, Earney was an accepting racer, “I guess you’ve got to accept the good with the bad,” the Cochrane, WI racer offered with an understanding smile, “I’ve had lots of ‘good’ this year, and it’s the nature of the sport – things break every so often – so now I have to accept the ‘bad’ as well.”

But while Earney reflected on the poor finish, Langowski was reveling in a strong second place finish behind fellow points chaser Rodney Dregney!

The separation between Earney and Langowski shrunk from 25 to 15 points. Before last week’s event, Earney looked a bit more focused while Langowski appeared to have a bit higher spring to his step.

Then last week’s August 12 feature brought more disaster Earney’s way and once again his blue #4 was listed as the last place finisher of those racers who’d started the feature – Langowski had finished sixth!

Headed into this evening’s action – with only two points paying events remaining, tonight and next Friday the 26th – the separation between Earney and Langowski is down to a scant three points . . . that’s THREE (as in 1, 2, 3) points!

But wait, there’s more! Mondovi’s Rodney Dregney has put together a string of strong finishes as well over the past few weeks (including his 3rd feature win of the season on August 5th) and finds himself only four points behind Langowski! And with last Friday night’s surprise feature win – his first of the season – Winonan Jon Duffy is only 13 points behind Dregney!

WHOA race fans – suddenly we’ve got ourselves yet another tight point battle upon which to focus over the final two weeks of regular season racing action!

Now, these final two weeks of on-track action do need a bit of explaining – so, get out your note pads and a No. 2 pencil – here we go:

This week (August 19th) is “Season Championship and Family Fun Night” presented by Gold’N Plump. In addition to all the family friendly events scheduled (Kids Rides around the track, A Sand Pile with hidden money, children’s hand-outs at the gate, and other family friendly prizes during intermission) the “Season Champions” will be crowned in the USRA and Midwest Modified Divisions along with the Super and Street Stock Divisions.

Now, “Season Champion” is not to be confused with “Point Champion”, because both FOX RIDGE and WISSOTA points will be awarded both tonight (August 19th) and next week (August 26th)!

So, to clarify, tonight (or next week – if weather doesn’t cooperate) FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY will crown “Season Champions” in the top four divisions. Then points gathered tonight and next week will add to the already exciting points battles to determine the track “Point Champions” in all five Divisions!

So, to continue a theme started with last week’s article, don’t miss a minute of the action – get out to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY tonight AND next Friday and witness some of the best on-track action as these drivers battle for two separate championships in each division!

BOUNCING AND BUMPING THROUGH THE FINAL WEEKS OF THE SEASON

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (ARCADIA, WI) – After Ol’ Mother Nature rained and rained and rained on the area late Wednesday evening and all day Thursday, the track-prep crew at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY had their work cut out for them just to insure that the races scheduled for Friday night could even be run.

Even people who’ve never been to a race track before in their entire lives know what the results will be when lots and lots of rain water are poured upon dirt and clay. The track-prep crew couldn’t even get onto the speedway until late Friday morning, they gave it their best effort but all the rain made for a rough racing surface that rattled the cars and drivers all night long.

HANSON HAPPY, HUND HEAVY-HEARTED

Despite the rough track conditions, Fountain City, WI’s Tom Hund had his #10 WISSOTA Street Stock ‘gliding’ across the surface and leaving all competitors behind. After winning the evening’s second Street Stock heat-race, Hund appeared on his way to his first feature win of the 2005 season.

With his Buick Regal effortlessly pulling away from the entire pack, including the dominant cars of Danny Hanson and Wayne Dean, Hund’s feature run was nothing short of impressive.

Jumping from the outside of the second row, Hund dispensed with the front row starters and led the opening lap. From there on it was the “Tom Hund and Guests” show and his Yellow racers pulled away from the field. By the end of the twelfth lap of the fifteen lap feature (all twelve of which had been led by Hund) the separation between the leader and the two car battle for second was almost an entire straightaway.

But just like that, Hund’s fortunes changes. Through turns one and two, Hund’s right rear tire went flat; and that, as they say, was that.

Wayne Dean and Danny Hanson, battling for a distant second, suddenly found themselves battling each other for the lead! Dean led lap 13 before Hanson worked around him for position and led the final two laps to pick up his sixth feature win of 2005.

Dean settled for a close second with previous week’s feature winner Michael Conrad working through the field for a third place finish.

DUFFY DELIGHTED
“I was just throwing that (car) down to the bottom as hard as I could,” commented WISSOTA Super Stock feature winner Jon Duffy, “and giving it all I had. I don’t know if I’ve ever driven it as hard as I did tonight!”

Duffy survived what turned out to be a wild, and a bit wacky, Super Stock feature which involved spins, bumps and bangs, car-body parts littering the surface, and a flying race car!

Justin Sass led the opening lap before second heat race winner Shawn Huse took the lead and remained out front for the next four circuits.

After four laps out front by Huse, Winonan Troy Brand rubbed his way past for the lead only to have the Bloomer, WI racer retake the lead for the next lap. But Huse’s lead would not last and the following lap would have just about everyone struggling to comprehend what had just transpired.

It all started in turn three when Huse’s familiar blue and yellow #1H spun to the infield while leading. This handed the lead over to Brand’s #177. Brand was then challenged by Duffy when Brand pushed up the banking in turn two. Duffy took the lead exiting the second turn and headed down the back straight as the leader.

Dan Nissalke followed Duffy’s bright Orange #47 beneath Brand and to challenge him for second. At the end of the back straightaway, the right rear of Nissalke and the left front of Brand touched and the ride was on!

The contact turned Nissalke’s #22 into a sharp right hand slide – Nissalke’s car slammed nose first into the back straight wall, climbed the concrete and became airbourne! Luckily for Nissalke, though, his car didn’t continue into a wild series of barrel rolls as has been seen in the past when others have made hard contact with the back straight wall.

The #22 slammed back down to the Earth on all four tires, but severely damaged. Nissalke climbed from the cockpit and wasted no time in locating Brand to display his displeasure the next time the 177 circled past under caution.

Speedway officials decided to put an end to the lengthy feature and flew the yellow and checkered flags simultaneously. Brand was dropped to the rear of the finishing order as the cause of the caution; since Brand had led the previously completed lap, the lead – and win – was then handed to the car that crossed the start/finish line second; that car was the #47 of Duffy.

“It’s been a long time since my last feature win,” offered a smiling Duffy, “I was headed towards the pits and the official directed me to Victory Lane – I was like ‘OK’! I’ll take the win and not complain about anything!”

Nissalke was awarded second with Mike Keller, visiting from Menomonee, WI., completing the top-three.

FENSKE FEATURE

Point leader Karl Fenske dogged last week’s USRA Modified feature winner Brad Waits for the opening five laps before the two swapped laps out front of the field for the three circuits of ‘The Big 3/8-Mile’.

Fenske then settled into his now familiar rhythm and pulled away from Waits to collect his seventh FOX RIDGE Feature win of 2005.

“Tonight was a battle of survival,” commented Fenske after the feature win, “All that rain Thursday made for a rough track.” Waits settled for second with Winonan Paul Hamernik rounding out the top-three.

MOREHART FINALLY BACK IN VICTORY LANE

Last year Eyota, MN retiree Harlan Morehart won the FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY WISSOTA Midwest Modified track championship. This year has not been nearly as successful.

Languishing outside the top-ten in this years point standings, Moreharts #17 had only collected two checkered flags this season – and those were heat races.

That all finally changed Friday night – and the crowd approved with thunderous applause!

Morehart took over the lead from pole-sitter Joel VonHaden, who’d led the opening six laps, and held of challenges from first heat race winner Jeff Brauer over the closing handful of laps to grab his first feature win of 2005.

Brauer put forth a valiant effort, but came up about ½ a car length short at the finish. Winona’s Bob Bautch finished third.

DOUBLE THE DWYER

LaCrosse, WI’s Steve Dwyer made it two feature wins in a row with his #42X 4-Cylinder Hornet. Working from the inside of the fifth row of the 24 car feature, Dwyer finished ahead of both Scott Kronn and point leader Mark Bornitz – the exact same top-three finishing order as the previous week.

Arcadia's Steve Bryn collected his first ever checkered flag by winning the second heat race while Dwyer and Michael Peters won the first and third heats respectively.

Next Friday night, August 19th will be the 2005 FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY Season Championships for the top four divisions (USRA Modifieds, WISSOTA Super Stocks, WISSOTA Street Stocks, & WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds). DON’T WAIT TILL ‘NEXT WEEK’ FOR A FOX RIDGE VISIT

(ARCADIA, Wisconsin) – “All season long you’ve been saying that you’ll make it out to the track ‘next week’,” my “Live Track-Side” radio show co-host John Albrecht likes to say, “But, guess what, there aren’t too many ‘next weeks’ left!”

It’s hard to believe, but the 2005 racing season is winding down. Tonight’s program at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY, Friday August 12th, signals the fact that we’re nearing the end. Including this evening’s program, there are only three regular Friday night shows remaining for the 2005 season (not counting the two-day ‘THUNDER AT THE RIDGE’ special in October)!

However, don’t let the fact that the remaining nights are diminishing trick you into thinking that the on-track action will do the same. In fact, just the opposite is fixing to occur as drivers ‘turn it up a notch’ in hopes of capitalizing on these last three nights of racing in hopes of finishing strong.

Perhaps they have a goal which is, as of yet, unmet; maybe the driver had wanted two, or even three, feature wins this year, and they’re not quite there yet.

Or maybe they’re embroiled in a tight points battle and they need the best possible finishes over these final nights to help in that points battle.

Or, maybe the driver is in the waning years, months or weeks of their racing career and simply want to ‘go out’ on a strong note.

The simple fact of the matter is that for the race fan, there’s almost no better time to be at the track than in these closing weeks.

The season opens strong and all drivers are filled with the fresh excitement of a new season – and it shows on the track.

Around the middle few weeks of the year, the drivers and teams sometimes seem to drop into a rut (the more polite reference might be ‘rhythm’) – and it sometimes shows on the track.
But the final few weeks of the season almost assuredly bring forth a new and almost revitalized spark. Some might call it desperation others might call it a ‘second wind’, ‘renewed verve’ or ‘gusto’. Either way, the on-track action can be quite thrilling!

With the season championship scheduled for next week (August 19th) the topic of points battles couldn’t be more emphasized than by a quick look at the FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY USRA Modified point standings.

Karl Fenske and John Doelle are embroiled in a battle for the championship and as of last week’s results are separated by only five (5) points. Five points!!

Or, how ‘bout the points battle in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Division. While Ryan Olson has a strong, but technically not insurmountable, lead of 23 points; the separation between Jeff Brauer in second and Dan Hesch in fifth is only 15 points.

Troy Langowski and Rodney Dregney (second and third, respectively) in the WISSOTA Super Stock Standings are only a single point apart and only 15 and 16 points behind 6-time feature winner Dennis Earney.

Danny Hanson more than likely has a WISSOTA Street Stock Championship locked up, but the battles for second and fourth will probably not be decided until the final two points-paying events come to a close!

And then there are the 4-Cylinder Hornets, the division that won’t have a season championship until the Friday August 26th event; with 78 cars in the point standings, there’ll be wholesale movement in the standings over these final three events!

So, as you can see, the action will not slow down. On the contrary, it will intensify over these final three weeks of regular season action at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY.

So take John Albrecht’s advice, don’t put off your visit to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY for next week or the week after, because there just aren’t too many ‘next weeks’ left!

The FOX RIDGE grandstands open tonight at 5 pm. Hot laps get underway at 7 with the first green flag at 7:30. Tonight is ‘Boy & Girls Scout Night at THE RIDGE’; scouts are encouraged to head to the track with their uniforms on to show their scouting involvement!

AUGUST OPENS WITH FOX RIDGE ACTION

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (ARCADIA, WI) – Race fans headed to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY Friday night August 5th to enjoy “KIDS NIGHT” presented by the Trempealeau County Crime Stoppers! Kids and grown-ups alike enjoyed a bountiful offering of prizes and gifts as members of area law enforcement, with assistance from “McGruff the Crime Dog”, spread the word about D.A.R.E. and other community building efforts underway in the area.

And, before the on-track action heated up, the crowd was treated with a couple special visits. LeRoy Scharkey was back at the track, wandering the grandstands and mingling with the crowd, after suffering a heart attack several weeks ago. Lonnie Earney, visiting a race track for the first time after his life-threatening wreck a couple months ago, carried the American Flag for the National Anthem while riding around the track in the D.A.R.E. car.

THE CONRAD COMEBACK

Sometimes the best moments in a race season come when they’re least expected.

Ask Independence, WI driver Michael Conrad and I’m sure he’d agree, “Over the past couple weeks I was wondering if I even wanted to finish the season!”

The third year driver was referring to the spate of bad luck he’d experienced over recent weeks. In one incident two weeks prior, his Orange #M76 left the track with rear end damage so severe it looked like the car ended at the rear tires!

Then there were troubles in the engine compartment that plagued his efforts; it was all getting quite frustrating.

But all the effort was worth it as Conrad picked up the very first feature win of his career Friday night! After a 10-lap side-by-side battle for the lead with Winonan Andy Bohnstengel, Conrad was able to stretch open the lead and pull away over the closing laps to grab the win.

The feeling around the Conrad pit area was a mixture of euphoria and relief, “I just can’t describe how this feels right now!” voiced Conrad as family members proudly displayed their first “Feature Winner” sticker.

Bohnstengel collected a strong second place finish while pole sitter Erik Kanz raced to his best feature finish of the year, third, holding off point leader Danny Hanson and first heat race winner Tom Hund.

LONG WAIT FOR THIRD WIN

After waiting two months since his previous feature win, Brad Waits was back in the FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY Victory Lane Friday night with feature win number three.

Waits took the lead from pole sitter Kerry Ledebuhr on lap two and then held off some solid challenges by point leader Karl Fenske before collecting the win. Over the closing laps Waits was able to pull away from Fenske, who then had to drive hard to retain second as John Doelle was closing in quickly. “I don’t think Fenske used up his equipment,” thought Waits after being asked about the lead that built up over the last third of the feature, “I’m more of a rhythm type of driver. I’m not sure if Karl was driving harder, but I just kept my rhythm and think I was just turning the same lap times through the whole feature.”

Fenske and Doelle remain locked in their struggle atop the point standings with second and third place finishes respectively.

DECISIVE DREGNEY WIN

Like Waits, Rodney Dregney also collected his third feature win of the season.

Racing from the inside of the fourth row, Dregney utilized an ultra low groove to clear race leader Troy Langowski on lap seven and lead the rest of the way to the win.

“Because of my starting position, I had to run the bottom,” explained Dregney, “But as I race continued the top began to look really good.”

Indeed, after taking the lead and seeing the top of the track open up, Dregney stepped up to the top groove and raced away from the competition. “I thought, I might as well go up there and try it,” laughed Dregney, “I moved up there and it was perfect, away we went.”

“You know, I need to say thanx to a couple guys,” continued Dregney, “Without Jeff and Brian Endle helping to make sure the car is in tip-top shape, I wouldn’t be in Victory Lane!”

Langowski added another second place feature finish to his stats with first time visitor Tim Johnson, hauling all the way down to FOX RIDGE from Brainerd, MN to collect a third place finish.

HOFFMAN WINS

Dean Hoffman once again made the trip from Eyota, MN to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY, as he has all season long. But Friday night, the trip home was more than likely a bit more enjoyable.

After racking up top-five feature finishes in exactly half of his feature starts, he finally collected his very first feature win on ‘The Big 3/8 Mile’.

Hoffman lead all but the opening lap en route to the win, with Dan Hesch and Ryan Olson completing the top-three.

DWYER DEFEATS HORNET’S BEST

Steve Dwyer visited FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY for just the third time this year and set a blistering pace in the 4-Cylinder HORNET feature which was fast enough to grab the feature win. After winning the evening’s second heat race, Dwyer was incredibly fast during the feature and quickly pulled away from almost the entire field.

Holmen, WI’s Scott Kronn put up a valiant effort in keeping up with Dwyer, but could never quite get up along side Dwyer’s #42x to challenge for the lead.

Point leader Mark Bornitz came from a fourteenth starting spot to finish third!

(ARCADIA, Wisconsin -/- And Back Yards throughout America) – What’s the first image that pops into your mind when you read the following words: ‘Dirt-Track Race Fan’?

Now, I know the dangers of stereotyping and such, but I’d be willing to bet that most of us put together a relatively similar mental image of an individual in the grandstands of a local short track (such as Arcadia’s FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY). More than likely, the single most similar aspect of all of our mental images would probably be the age of that fan.

Doesn’t matter if our image skews more towards the younger end of the spectrum – late teenager, early-20s – or more towards the older end – Parents, Generation-X’ers, and/or Grandparents – I’m pretty confidant that most of us called up a mental image of an adult.

However, the future of Stock Car Auto racing is alive and well with some devoted fans who are still too young to even drive a street car. That’s right, I’m talking about the kids!

Every night, as the FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY announcer, I look out over the crowd spread across the spacious concrete FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY grandstands, and I see two groups of fans – ‘the grown ups’ and ‘the kids’. Two distinct groups that are both enjoying the night.

‘The Grown Ups’ are enjoying the excitement and the company of others – and so are the kids.

The kids are simply captivated by the ‘spectacle’ before them – loud and colorful Race Cars, zipping around in front of them just daring them to look away for a moment!

And if the child does finally muster up the strength to peel his or her attention away from the on-track action, more often than not its to redirect their attention to that other race going on – you know the one I’m talking about.

It’s that other race where the bright green Hot-Wheels car has just taken the lead from the red and white Matchbox car – they’re both skidding through the corners and headed towards an undoubtedly close ‘photo-finish’ at the checkered flag.

The colors and types of cars might change from child to child – but I’m sure they’ve all enjoyed that ‘miniature feature’ at least a dozen times. As a matter of fact, I bet plenty of ‘the grown ups’ in the crowd enjoyed similar ‘miniature races’ before they were ‘the grown ups’.

I know I sure did!

If the kids aren’t embroiled in either of these two races (the full-sized event out on the track, or the miniature event happening around their parents’ feet) they’re off with a group of friends explaining why Dennis Earney could beat Jeff Gordon any day, or how they are going to build a race car some day and beat Karl Fenske to the checkered flag or how last week they ate two hot-dogs, three orders of cheese curds, a piece of pizza, AND an ice cream bar during the feature races!

Or maybe, if they’re one of the ‘lucky ones’, they’re pointing out onto ‘THE BIG 3/8-MILE’ and showing all their friends which car their Dad/Brother or Sister/Uncle/Grandpa/Neighbor/etc. is driving right now!!

Kids, are the future of our sport and every sport – they’re the future of everything.

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY realizes how important children are to local stock car racing – that is why this Friday night, August 5th is ‘KIDS NIGHT at THE RIDGE’ presented by ‘The Trempealeau County Crime Stoppers’. The entire evening is being scheduled around the youngsters.

There will be two complete bike sets (brand new bike and accompanying safety helmet) given away to a lucky boy and girl. There will be free rides for the kids – around the speedway in some of the real full-sized race cars! Local law enforcement officials will be on hand to make Children’s Safety IDs for the Parents. The D.A.R.E. Car will be on display for all to view, and a representative will be on hand to answer questions. And there will be other prizes at intermission.

And just like every regular race night this season, the youngsters 12 years of age and younger, get into the races at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY absolutely FREE!!

So, come on Mom and Dad, pack the kids into the car and head on over to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY to enjoy ‘KIDS NIGHT’ – you never know, that little one in the back seat saying, “VROOM VROOM!! RACEY CAR FAST!” might be the future Champion in a local or national racing series!!

DUELLMAN RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE AT FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY

Race Fans another night of high-speed action Friday July 29th presented by SUPREME GRAPHICS of Arcadia at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY!

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (ARCADIA, WI) – The thing that is so enjoyable about racing is that no matter how a driver’s performance of past events might influence fans expectations for future results, no one really knows who will finish where until the checkered flag flies.

A driver who’s struggled over the first half of the season might figure out the exact setup tweak necessary to suddenly propel his right to consistent finishes at or near the front of the field for the second half of the season. And, of course, the reverse of that example is possible as well.

A driver who’s dominated in the past, might suddenly find himself struggling for a top-five finish.

DUELLMAN DEFEATS

After a 2004 season that saw Winonan Les Duellman win every single regular season feature, except one, that he started – a total of nine regular season feature wins in 10 starts – 2005 has not been quite as successful.

It hasn’t been a failure my any measures (six top-five finishes, 7 top-10s, in seven starts) but, up until Friday July 29th, he was winless in his seven feature race starts.

That all changed with a charge from the outside of the third row in Friday’s USRA Feature. Pole sitter Brad Waits grabbed the lead with the drop of the green flag and lead the opening five laps. Duellman, however, was hooked up and racing toward the front.

With Waits riding the very top of the high FOX RIDGE banking, Duellman dropped to the bottom and the two veterans put on an riveting 5-lap side by side battle for the lead! Half way through that battle, Duellman worked past Waits for the lead – Waits wasn’t about to roll-over and simply give up the lead, and continued to challenge for the top spot until a lap eight restart allowed Duellman to pull away for good.

“I’d been watching the track progress through the earlier features,” commented Duellman, “So, we were making small adjustments through the night right up until the start of our feature.”

Those changes were spot-on and gave Duellman a ride that responded exactly as he’d wanted, and expected. “I (ran) low to get past cars for position,” explained Duellman, “But then once I got free, I’d use that high line cause it was just SO smooth.”

Waits was relegated to a second place finish with Mick Glenn putting on one of his strongest displays in recent memory to battle through the field for a third place finish, “It’s taken us a while to figure this car out,” explained a jubilant Glenn, “But we’ve been making improvements every week and tonight we’re seeing that work pay off.”

HUSE WINS SUPER FEATURE

After a couple weeks of what seemed like nothing but bad luck, Bloomer, Wi’s Shawn Huse returned to the location where the 2005 season started for him way back in April – the FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY Victory Lane.

“Oh, these last couple of weeks have been tough,” Huse commented, reflecting on the prematurely shorted features brought about by bad breaks over the previous weeks, “We had that throttle linkage break, then that bad wreck last week pretty much broke just about everything on the right front corner of the suspension – it was really nobody’s fault, just a pile up that collected me.”

But, Friday night, Huse battled back to where he belongs, leading every lap of the 15-lap WISSOTA Super Stock feature to collect his second feature win of the 2005 season.

The opening three laps were a nice battle with local youngster Travis Wagner, who picked up the very first checkered flag of his career earlier in the evening, winning the night’s second heat-race. But Huse was able to take sole possession of the top spot and race on to the win.

Rodney Dregney worked through the field for a second place finish, with first heat race winner Troy Brand finishing third.

KRAUSE CRUISES TO WIN

An outside second row starting position was not enough to keep Travis Krause out of the lead by the end of lap number one. Krause dispensed with the front row of Matt Steffen and Dan Hesch, and went on to lead laps one through fifteen of the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature.

Running right down around the apron, Krause pulled away for a comfortable lead and a well deserved win, “Well, I didn’t really want to run down low,” smiled Krause after the win, “but that’s where the car handled the best.”

First heat race winner Jeff Brauer worked the field for a second place finish with Bob Bautch grabbing third.

HANSON AGAIN

Alma, Wisconsin driver Danny Hanson is having a ‘career year’ through 2005. Ten heat race wins and four feature checkered flags were pumped up another notch to eleven and five respectively compliments of yet another ‘clean sweep’ in the WISSOTA Street Stock division Friday night.

The opening three laps of the Street Stock feature were lead by Eau Claire’s Adam Wilken, then it was Hanson’s turn. Working past Wilken’s #21 Hanson moved to the front and lead the remainder of the event.

The previous week’s feature winner, Kylan Gamez, put forth an impressive effort to work up onto Hanson’s rear bumper, and actually pull up along side on several occasions, but Gamez was not quite able to work past for the win.

Gamez settled for second with Michael Conrad, battling back from a hard wreck the previous week, to an impressive third place finish.

NIEDERKORN WINS FIRST

Ettrick, Wisonsin driver Roger NiederKorn picked up his first feature win of the 2005 season by holding off challenges by point leader, and first heat race winner, Mark Bornitz in the 12-lap 4-Cylinder Hornet feature.

“B-Feature” winner Ryan Happel stunned the crowd by racing from the tenth row starting position to a third place finish!

BOB BAUTCH – FROM WASHER TO WINNER

(WINONA, Minnesota -/- ARCADIA, Wisconsin) – This year, Bob Bautch has visited Victory Lane with his WISSOTA Midwest Modified at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY; but in spending time with him, talking about racing, and life in general, I quickly found out that Bob pretty much spends every day in Victory Lane.

Perhaps better put would be to say that in speaking with Bob I get a sense of a person who somehow finds a way to see ‘Victory Lane’ in his every day life. Now, I don’t know all the details of Bob’s personal life – but he sure comes across as a ‘down to earth’ type of guy who loves his family, enjoys a great laugh when ever possible and is not afraid to have some fun by putting his right foot firmly atop the accelerator while strapped behind the wheel of his #74 Modified.

Every one of my questions directed to Bob are met with a sincere expression of appreciation for what he’s got and a desire to make the most out of it.

So it was way back in 1979 when Bob’s family moved to the area and the young transplanted Milwaukeean suddenly found himself around race cars. “My step-father was a friend of Rick Hauser – they went to school together when they were younger and he helped as a member of Rick’s pit crew.” Bautch explains, and then adds with a laugh, “Me? I washed the car. That was my big introduction to racing!”

Month after month, year after year, Bautch absorbed all the information he could about racing, and by then end of the ‘80s he was rewarded with some complimentary driving time behind the wheel of Hauser’s #19 Modified during ‘Pit-Man Races’.

At the same time, Bautch was also immersing himself into his own racing endeavors – but somewhere along the way he lost two of the four tires to which stock car fans are so accustomed. “I started ice racing motorcycles,” explains Bautch, “Man, we’d go everywhere around the area.”

Despite the fun Bautch was experiencing, he was quickly brought back to reality, “It was ’92, the same year my daughter was born, and I got busted up in a pretty bad wreck. It really made me think about my wife and my daughter and I thought to myself, ‘It’s time to put a roll cage around me!’ “

In ’97 Bautch got his big break, Hauser was unable to drive his Modified – so fellow racer Ron Britain took over driving duties. This left Britain’s street stock with out a driver – and Bob was without a car. “I drove Ron’s Street Stock that year had a great time!” offered Bautch.

In ’98 it was up to the Super Stock division, “Jon Duffy had a second car and he let me drive it in ’98 and ’99.” explained Bob of that two-year stint, “But, at the time, I really didn’t have enough money to do it right, so after ’99 I stopped driving.”

For the next four years, Bautch served as Duffy’s “Professional Fill-In Driver”, “Whenever Jon wasn’t able to drive, if he was off enjoying Rock-fest or something, he’d let me drive the car; I guess as kind of a ‘thank you’ for helping him with the car.”

Then, over the second half of last year, Bautch got back behind the wheel as more than just a ‘fill in’ driver. And this season, Bautch is behind the wheel as a full-time competitor in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Division.

And he’s competing in the Division as it was originally intended by WISSOTA, it’s supposed to be a ‘lower buck’ division for older equipment. “I’m having a LOT of fun this year,” offers Bautch, “I’m up in the points because of consistency and I’m proud of my results considering my equipment. The chassis I’m driving this year is a 1991 chassis built by Robert Ledebuhr – almost all of my equipment consists of hand-me-downs or used stuff.”

Of course, a true racer, Bautch is still looking for just a little more, “I’d really love to win a feature.”

And Bautch knows that the sport is about more than just him, “This car wouldn’t even be on the track if it weren’t for people like Tommy, Timmy and Tina Brink – the whole Brink Family . . . even “Grandpa” has made this possible. People like Mike Schueler help me more than most people understand.”

And then Bautch shows his true self, “And I need to say a special thanks to my wife Cindy and my Daughter Andrea. No matter how I do on the track, they meet me after every race with a smile and hugs and a cheer!”

Friday July 29th Bautch will have his Blue #74 back on the track at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY with high hopes of adding another checkered flag to his statistics – hopefully associate with a feature race finish!

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (ARCADIA, WI) – Race fans laughed in the face of the hot, humid and muggy weather that continued to show its presence over the west-central Wisconsin country side by celebrating with ‘Hawaiian Night’ fun presented by TRIWEST Communications Friday July 22nd at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY.

And even as the fans battled the heat, the on-track action was hot and heavy as well. Little did the crowd, or the regular weekly competitors for that matter, know that the evening’s results would be heavily influenced by a handful of ‘visiting’ drivers making guest appearances at ‘The Big 3/8-Mile’.

KONKEL WINS ON FIRST TRY

Caledonia, MN's Ron Konkel turned his first behind the wheel visit to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY into a USRA Modified 'clean-sweep'!

“I’d come here just to watch as a spectator on one of the opening nights when FOX RIDGE first opened,” explained USRA Feature winner Ron Konkel, “But tonight was my very first time ever actually on the track.”

Gauging by his on-track performance, not many would have believed it. After winning the second USRA heat race, the Caledonia, MN driver shot through the feature race pack from his fourth row inside starting spot and stole the lead from 2005 dominator Karl Fenske on lap three.

What made it all the more impressive is that, taking into account Fenske’s dominating performance this year, the pass for the lead was almost a ‘non-event’. Konkel dove to the bottom cleared Fenske on the straight and then, after a couple laps of Fenske hanging out around his rear bumper, simply pulled away to a commanding lead.

“I liked the bite down low,” explained Konkel of his pass for the lead down low and then his switch to the top groove for the remainder of the feature, “but the set up I was trying was better up top.”

“I couldn’t believe all the room out there,” continued Konkel, impressed with the racing room at FOX RIDGE, “There were openings everywhere, so I just used the space as I found it and got to the front maybe even quicker that I’d expected!”

Les Duellman cleared Fenske for second on lap nine and then closed in slightly on Konkel but was never able to actually engage for a battle out front. “We’d made some minor setup adjustments,” explained Duellman, “but even with more laps I don’t think I could have caught the winner.”

Fenske held on for a third place finish with John Doelle finishing right behind him in fourth. Fenske and Doelle continue their dual atop the point standings, separated now my only 10 points!

STANTON STUNS STARTERS

Jere Stanton raced his way to the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature Win!

Arpin, WI’s Jere Stanton, visiting FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY for only the second time during the 2005 season, laid down the law and walked way with two checkered flags by the time the night’s WISSOTA Super Stock action was complete.

After winning the evening’s second heat race, Stanton lined up on the Pole for the 18-lap feature event. With the drop of the green flag outside pole sitter Gary Wiersgalla jumped out to the front to lead the opening lap, but Stanton was not to be denied.

Pulling his #21S up to challenge Wiersgalla for the top spot, Stanton took over the lead on lap two and lead for the remainder of the event to pick up the feature win.

Stanton also enjoyed a 'clean sweep' - winning both his heat race and the Super Stock Feature!

While Stanton lead the way, that action behind him was intense with a six-car battle for second that lasted almost the entirety of the feature. Over the first five laps Shawn Huse pressured Stanton hard, using a combination of both the low and high grooves to challenge for the lead.

But a lap-six four-wide battle for position produced a tangle exiting turn two that eventually brought Huse’s challenges, and feature race, to a close.

The on track action was actually interrupted several times by cautions; one of which slowed traffic with the T-2 of David Nastvold lying on it’s roof top on the outside of turn two.

After Huse’s withdrawal from the battle for position, and with Stanton opening up a lead, the fan’s attention was focused on the six-car battle for second.

Wiersgalla, Jon Duffy, first heat-race winner Rodney Dregney, Dennis Earney, Troy Brand, and Troy Langowski fought tooth and nail for every inch of racing space. Dregney, working from the rear of the field after a lap three caution, finally usurped second place from Wiersgalla on lap 16.

GAMEZ GRINS WITH WIN

Home-town racer Kylan Gamez picked up his first WISSOTA Street Stock Feature Win of the 2005 season!

Several weeks ago, a radio interview with Arcadia’s Kylan Gamez showed the frustration this driver was feeling. “I feel like I’m just banging up against a brick wall.” Commented the WISSOTA Street Stock driver, “I had those three third place finishes, and now I’m struggling to get the set up to work.”

After which one of his crew members chuckled and added, “Sooner or later we’ll just knock that brick wall down!”

Friday night was Gamez’s night to show that he had, indeed, cleared that brick wall. Starting from the inside of the second row, Gamez cleared the front row on the opening lap and led the entire 15-lap feature event to grab his first feature win of the 2005 season at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY.

Current point leader Danny Hanson battled the field valiantly, but wasn’t able to deny Gamez his visit to Victory Lane, Hanson finished second ahead of heat-race #1 winner Chuck Nerland and Dennis Davis.

OLSON COLLECTS HIS THIRD

Ryan Olson collected his third WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature of the year!

It took nine laps of the 12-lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature for 20-year old Ryan Olson to get to the front, but once there, he was in the lead to stay.

Working from the outside of the fourth row, Olson passed Travis Krause to lead the final three laps and pick up his third feature victory of this season.

Post race discussions between Olson and his family and crew focused on how well the #21 handled the track and conditions, “I could run where I needed to run or where I wanted to run. This car was awesome tonight!”

Krause and Bud Pehler completed the top three.

BORNITZ BEATS ‘EM

Mark Bornitz added another tick-mark to the win column of his 'stats sheet' by winning another 4-Cylinder Hornets Feature!

Mark Bornitz added to his point lead with his third 4-Cylinder Hornets feature win of the year. After winning the third heat race, Bornitz raced to the front of the feature and passed second heat race winner Robert Carpenter for the lead and eventual win.

After winning the third heat race, the Feature win gave Bornitz another 'clean sweep' on the evening!

Mike Skroch worked through the ‘B Feature’ as one of the six final transfer cars to the ‘A Main’, and then battled the 24-car pack from a 23 position starting spot to finish an amazing third!

Racing resumes next Friday night with a complete night of High-Banked High-Speed Dirt-Track action presented by Supreme Graphics of Arcadia. All five divisions will hit the track for an evening of racing action.

FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY (ARCADIA, WI) – Friday night July 15th, race fans intent on starting their weekend with an evening of Family Fun ignored the excessively humid heat and flocked to FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY to enjoy an evening of “Rockin’ the Ridge” with KG 95.3 / Budweiser Night at Speedway. Little did they know that the family fun would spill over from the crowded grandstands, onto the track and then right into Victory Lane.

Family involvement has always been strong in stock car racing, Friday night three racers – related by blood line as well as their passion for Motorsports – collected ‘clean sweeps’ – winning both the heat race and feature event in their respective divisions.

DREGNEY DRIVES TO VICTORY

After swapping the lead with Shawn Huse, Mondovi's Rod Dregney motored on to win his second WISSOTA Super Stock feature and first 'clean sweep'!

The evening’s WISSOTA Super Stock feature event provided the crowd with both extremes of the sport: action and carnage!

After taking the green flag to start the 18-lap feature, the pack raced into turns one and two. At the transition from turn one to turn two, Justin Sass’s #24 – starting from the outside of the second row – got loose and spun sideways. What followed was pretty similar to a multi-car freeway pileup as row after row behind Sass simply smashed into the every expanding collection of wrecked cars littering the exit of turn two.

When the dust had settled, more than half the field had become involved in the accident. Some were able to drive away others were ‘assisted’ to the pits via the business end of the speedway tow trucks.

With the wreckage cleared off the track, the remaining cars headed back to green flag racing. Shawn Huse worked the top groove of the banks like a master and lead the opening five laps. With Huse working up top, Rodney Dregney, dove his black #88 to the bottom in search of extra bite to challenge for the top position.

Dregney cleared Huse’s #1H to lead the next two circuits until Huse dove to the bottom and passed for the lead in the exact same way. “I was getting some amazing traction down at the bottom,” explained Dregney after the feature, “Huse was running around the top and I got around him on the bottom. Then he did the same to me and I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to get back down there!’”

First heat race winner Huse lead another circuit before Dregney was able to get to the bottom again and retake the lead on lap nine. Huse challenged for the lead again but met with near disaster with just two laps to go, “I went into turn one, lifted out of the throttle and the car simply didn’t slow down,” explained the Bloomer, WI. Racer of the broken throttle linkage that kept him from further challenges for the lead, “the car was stuck wide open! I was reaching for the kill switch and standing on the brake at the same time!”

Huse’s hopes for a win were over with the white flag literally in site.

After winning the second heat race, Mondovi, WI’s Dregney made it a ‘clean sweep’ with the Feature Win, “After being involved in racing for almost 15 years,” offered Dregney, “This is my first every sweep!”

Pole sitter Dan Arneson held of some extremely stout challengers and raced his way to his best feature finish of the season in second, followed by the previous week’s feature winner Troy Langowski.

OLSON COLLECTS SECOND FEATURE WIN

Young Ryan Olson grabbed his second WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature to complete the evening's second 'clean sweep'!

College Student Ryan Olson used the bottom groove as well and raced his way from the outside of the fourth row to grab his second feature victory of the 2005 season at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY."

I was running as low as absolutely possible,” explained Olson of the low line that carried him to victory.

After winning the first WISSOTA Midwest Modified heat race, Olson – just like his uncle Dregney – grabbed a ‘clean sweep’ in his division. “I’ve got to tell you,” said the young Strum, WI. Racer, “This car is working awesome. And I tell you, if it weren’t for the people helping me, especially my Dad and guys like Jared, Brad, and everyone else who grabs a wrench or helps out in any way, I wouldn’t be doing nearly as well!”

After picking up his first feature win the week before, Jeff Brauer settled for a distant second just ahead of Dean Hoffman.

HANSON RETURNS WITH A WIN

Alma's Danny Hanson returned after a disappointing previous week to win his fourth WISSOTA Street Stock feature and the evening's third 'clean sweep'!

Just one week after a frustrating night for Alma, WI. racer Danny Hanson, he returned to FOX RIDGE with his familiar #5 and raced his way to Victory Lane – twice!. After winning the opening WISSOTA Street Stock heat race, Hanson reeled in Michael Conrad and passed him approaching the white flag lap, to collect the third ‘clean sweep’ of the evening.

“What a night for this extended family,” laughed a smiling Hanson after the win, “Rod Dregney, Ryan Olson, me … we’re all related and we all swept our divisions!”

Conrad offered up a solid return challenge on the white flag lap, until a lapped car took away his line in turn four coming down to the checkered flag, and was forced to accept second. Fountain City’s Tom Hund finally broke his three week string of second place finishes – unfortunately it was a third place finish that broke the string rather than a win. “I’ve got that car working perfectly,” smiled Hund, “except, I ruined the motor at the checkered flag! So, this week I’ll drop my old motor back in and see if it can make it one more night.”

Hanson, Olson and Dregney – all related – emphasized the family nature of this sport on a successful note.

DOELLE DOMINATES

John Doelle returned to Victory Lane picking up his second USRA Modified feature win of the 2005 season!

“Sometimes I just don’t know what it is,” admitted Arcadia’s John Doelle, “some nights are a struggle, some nights are perfect.” Friday night was about two steps past perfect.

Embroiled in a tight points battle atop the USRA Modified standings with Karl Fenske, Doelle pulled his blue #94jr onto the track, clawed his way to the front and never once looked back. By the time the checkered flag flew, Doelle had almost a ½ lap lead over the three-car battle for second place.

“Just before the race I asked where they were running in the Super Feature,” explained Doelle, “’Down Low’ I was told and I kept it right at the bottom through the entire feature. The car handled perfectly down there.”

Behind Doelle (WAY BEHIND, that is) Jay Ihrke, Rick Hauser and Brad Waits battled for second. Ihrke came from fourth to second in the final two laps with Waits crossing the line third just in front of Hauser’s #19.

CARPENTER CAPS HIS THIRD

Chalk up 4-Cylinder HORNET feature victory number three for Black River Falls' Robert Carpenter!

The 4-Cylinder Hornets never cease to amaze the crowds on hand at FOX RIDGE SPEEDWAY. In one of the evening’s three heat races, the crowd witnessed a 7-wide battle for position on the front straight!! I’m going to retype that because the odds of that sentence ever showing up in a race report ever again are slim to none!

It was a seven car wide battle for position!!

That’s why this division is quickly gaining in popularity.

The evening’s feature saw Robert Carpenter collect his third feature win of the season after taking the lead from Brad Duellman on lap five. Point leader Mark Bornitz finished second just in front of Mike Thompson.
